He mentored Timothy, a young pastor with a Jewish mother and Greek father (Acts 16:1), and entrusted him with leadership in the church. Paul refers to Timothy as his “beloved child” in the faith (2 Timothy 1:2), reflecting their close spiritual bond.

Recipient: Timothy, serving in Ephesus, a major city in Asia Minor.

C. Framework
The Legacy and the Loyalty: Faithfulness in the Face of Finality (2 Timothy 1–4)
Paul writes his final letter from a Roman prison, knowing his death is near. His tone is urgent, personal, and pastoral. He exhorts Timothy to remain faithful to the gospel, endure suffering, and carry on the mission with courage and conviction.
Ch 1: The Flame and the Faithfulness Paul reminds Timothy of his spiritual heritage and urges him to fan into flame the gift of God. He calls for boldness, not shame, in suffering for the gospel, and praises Onesiphorus for his loyal support.
Ch 2: The Endurance and the Example Paul uses metaphors—a soldier, athlete, and farmer—to illustrate disciplined service. He urges Timothy to pass on sound teaching, avoid quarrels, and pursue righteousness with a pure heart.
Ch 3: The Scriptures and the Struggle Paul warns of increasing godlessness and deception. He urges Timothy to remain anchored in Scripture, which is inspired and sufficient for teaching, correction, and training in righteousness.
Ch 4: The Charge and the Crown Paul gives Timothy a solemn charge to preach the Word with urgency and patience. He reflects on his own life, declaring he has finished the race. He anticipates the crown of righteousness and sends final greetings to faithful and fallen companions.
